David Schlotterback (DSchlot.com) partnered with the Nebraska Department of Education in the development of eLearning modules aimed at training staff on the state rule regarding English Learner programs in school districts throughout Nebraska. The training modules also provide support in creating and integrating the programs statewide.

THE NEED

NDE held concern regarding the complexity of the current eLearning training material for ESL (English as a Second Language) support and integration throughout the state.

Their directive was to provide dynamic online training that would increase learning outcome, close any learning gaps detected within the current training material, and increase learner motivation, while simultaneously reducing cognitive overload commonly affiliated with complex instruction.

THE STRATEGY

The strategy utilized by David in conjunction with NDE was to provide an interactive experience that would reinforce formative and summative assessments throughout the training course. To eliminate any cognitive overload and increase learner motivation, it was decided to chunk the learning material into eight modules.

THE RESULT

The eight-module course was approved by the Nebraska Department of Education and released to staff integrating ESL in school districts throughout the state. The minimal revisions to the material related mostly to terminology or updates to the rule that were not reflected in the original training.

With the success in meeting the directive provided by the state in reducing cognitive overload, increasing learning outcome, and bridging learning gaps, NDE continues to contract with David in the development of additional modules aimed at various staffing programs being integrated throughout Nebraska school districts.

My approach to all IDT projects is to be the second set of eyes and to view the material from the vantage point of the user or student. In doing so, I can assist in the instructional design of the material where needed by providing suggestions that can potentially increase the outcome of the material being delivered and remedy issues found in the content.

Who is Dschlot.com?

David Schlotterback

Hello! My name is David Schlotterback and I assist organizations and companies in the creation and development of online training and eLearning courses. Born and raised in Kansas, I moved to California in 2000 to pursue a career in Graphic Design and Multimedia Design for an education foundation.

I graduated from Emporia State University (ESU) in Emporia, Kansas with a Bachelor of Science in Education degree with a dual major in Art Education and History Education. I have a long history in the education field be it in the classroom or working for educational organizations that influence or assist the classroom. I am currently in my final year of pursuing my graduate degree in Instructional Design and Technology at ESU.
